Accuracy improvements

The algorithm according to which real time distances and speeds are computed by TheSkyLive has been changed and improved in accuracy. This is a summary of the changes.

Before:

  • Speed values indicated the rate of change of the distance from ths Sun and Earth. That’s why, as some users reported, the speed of comet ISON was decreasind.
  • Speed and distances were calculated through linear interpolation between two discrete points from JP data

After:

  • Speed values now refer to the modulus of the relative speed of the object with respect to the Sun and Earth as this is a more interesting value, in particular for objects approaching perihelion.
  • Accuracy has been improved by using a cubic interpolation through four data points
